The Shore
View
this Collection . . .
Scenes along the shore wherever that shore may be have a powerful attraction for me. I love the juxtaposition of the land along the banks with the open views over the water that carry the eye out into the distance. Being a New Yorker for most of my life and living in the suburbs which are lush with foliage and trees but have few open vistas, the shore is the main place where one is really aware of the sky and the drama that is played out there. Many of these paintings are scenes from my trips to Cape Cod and Shelter Island but they also include the shoreline along the Hudson River and the Long Island Sound Shore.

Landscapes
View
this Collection . . .
During the last decade, landscapes have become a favorite subject. I've always loved nature but it wasn't until recent years that I began to paint on location and to discover the challenge and delight of attempting to capture a scene while I was immersed in it. I have found that my eyes see far more color subtleties than the camera is able to capture. Now, even if I paint a scene in the studio, I work from color sketches I've done on location or from a combination of photos and notes I've made about color while I'm outside taking it all in.

Sold Work
View
this Collection . . .
I'm adding this collection in order to help the visitor to this site choose between viewing sold work and available work. Occasionally a painting that has sold will still be in another collection until I edit the site and move it into the sold folder. Most of the time, paintings seen in other folders will all be available and for sale. The exception is the Portraits Collection which contains examples of portraits that have been commissioned and are in private collections.
Sometimes, I am so drawn to some of the images that I have painted and sold and enjoyed doing them so much that I do another version of the painting. Other times, I use the original image as a jump-off point for a larger studio painting or try the subject again in a different format such as going from a horizontal to a vertical image or to a square.

New Mexico
View
this Collection . . .
I spent two weeks in New Mexico last summer and the summer before and plan to do so again this year. Coming from a lifetime of living on the East Coast, I find the dramatically different terrain and weather conditions very inspiring. I love the difference in overall color between an Eastern summer scene and a Southwest scene and am very drawn to the textures and gray-greens of the bushes and grasses that grow there.
My store of paintings is growing so I thought that it was a good time to form a new collection consisting of the plein air and studio paintings that I've been completing with New Mexico as the subject.

Manor Park
View
this Collection . . .
Manor Park in Larchmont, NY is a charming little park located on the shores of the Long Island Sound. It's distinctive gazebos and wonderful rocky outcroppings have given me pleasure throughout the years since I discovered the park as a young girl. I've been painting small watercolors of the various views through the years and have also chosen two of my watercolors to publish as limited edition giclee prints.
In addition to prints and originals, I am offering a boxed set of 6 assorted cards of Manor Park scenes. Call 914 428-1224 or email Phyllis to order.

The paintings in this collection have been done through the last 7 or 8 years and are still in my possession and available for sale. Many are watercolors, since for many years, especially when I was actively engaged in the field of commercial illustration, I focussed more on watercolor than on oil. Then, as I began a transition toward fine art and portraiture, I continued with watercolors because I had become very comfortable working with them.

Florals
View
this Collection . . .
Every so often, I'll get the urge to do a floral painting or two. Sometimes it's a gift of a bouquet of flowers that will inspire me. Sometimes I go out looking for flowers with colors or shapes that intrigue me and then play around with vases and drapes and lighting to create a composition.
