Painting on Cape Cod

In June, I spent a week painting scenes around the Wellfleet and Truro area of Cape Cod. You might expect June to be a warm month but on the Cape that isn't always the case. From one day to the next and sometimes during the same day, the weather went from cold and windy to warm and balmy.

Changeable weather creates a lot of challenges for an outdoor painter. Sometimes, it took several hours of driving from one scenic location to the next to find a place sheltered enough to even consider setting up my equipment and painting.

Luckily, I know the Cape well enough to have been prepared for all types of weather. I carried and often wore four or five layers worth of clothing and added and removed layers as needed. I must say that I don't win any beauty queen awards for the way I look when I'm painting.

In spite of or because of the challenges the weather can present, a day outdoors from morning till night is tremendously exhilerating. Also exhausting, but in a very good way.
