Fall Day on the Hudson at Cold Spring
Every so often, I decide to paint a subject in a square format instead of the more customary rectangle. With landscapes, it enables me to hone in on a small portion of the greater picture and focus on the details in that area.
I felt that this small section of the Hudson River had enough going for it that it worked as a square. The mountains met and created different levels and angles, the passing sailboat added a human element to the scene and the bushes along the banks (which I arbitrarily moved) helped to keep the eyes circling around the composition.
